This is an excellent and well-written book aimed at dental nurses studying for a qualification in oral health education.
It is divided into six main sections, compromising 33 chapters, all of which follows a methodical and logical order. The first half aims to provide the reader with basic knowledge of the oral cavity, the disease process and advice on oral disease prevention. This is followed by detailed methods of delivering oral health education and promotion. The book concludes with the current UK society efforts to improve the oral health of the nation.
Each chapter is concise, giving the reader clear learning outcomes and allowing the reader to consolidate their knowledge gained. Each chapter is well referenced and guides the enthusiast towards further reading.
The authors emphasise the importance of a patient centred approach when delivering oral health education and tailoring the advice to be dependent on individual circumstances. A whole section is dedicated in targeted advice to pregnant patients, the pre-11-year-oldd, adolescent and orthodontic patients, older people and the at-risk and special-care patients. This I found to be particularly beneficial in breaking down communication barriers when delivering oral health education.
Furthermore, practical tips are given on setting up a preventative dental unit, obtaining resources for use of delivering oral health messages and how to prepare oral hygiene sessions both inside and outside of the workplace.
This is a well thought out and clearly written publication, where the authors' knowledge and experiences are clearly conveyed to the reader. Although it is aimed at dental nurses, I believe this book will be an ideal revision aid for dentists, dental students, dental hygienists and therapists in their pursuit of oral health education and promotion.
